IMPORTANT: Next week’s toolchain upgrade will introduce breaking changes
The 64-bit release (26.36) planned for September 1, 2026, introduces a significant overhaul of our core development stack, including:
- Kotlin 2.3.21: A required upgrade to the core Kotlin version.
- Android Gradle Plugin (AGP) 9.3.1: A required move, which brings Gradle 9.6.1 along with it.
- TOML-based version catalogs: Will be available for developers who want centralized dependency management, though this is not required to build on the updated stack.
These changes are not merely incremental updates. They are a major leap forward for Code on the Go (CoGo™), providing greater stability, improved performance, and a standardized development environment so you can focus on Kotlin code instead of build configurations.
The new toolchain is a breaking change for existing projects. New projects created with the updated Code on the Go need no action from you. However, projects you built with an older version of Code on the Go will not build until you make a few changes to their Gradle configuration. To help ease the transition to the new toolchain, the following resources are available:
- The migration guide explains how to update your projects to use the new toolchain.
- This article in our blog discusses the overall benefits and strategy behind the change.
These upcoming changes only apply to the 64-bit version of CoGo. If you use the 32-bit version of CoGo, you will not be affected by this change.
NEW: Install plugins and templates without launching the app first
You can now install plugins and templates by opening them outside Code on the Go. For example, if someone emails you a plugin or template, opening the attachment automatically launches Code on the Go, which asks if you want to install the item. And, if you keep downloaded plugins and templates in your Download folder instead of deleting them, you can quickly add them to a fresh installation of CoGo.
The first time you open a plugin or template outside CoGo, the Android OS will ask you to select a program to open it. If you select Code on the Go, the app will open on the plugin manager page and ask you to confirm that you want to install the add-on.
NEW: Kotlin and Java code actions
- Kotlin code action: Extract method. This code action allows selected expressions or sibling statements to be moved into a new function with captured locals handled as parameters.
- Java code action: try/catch: This code action wraps selected code in a try block and automatically generates catch blocks for checked exceptions.
Other changes
- Updated Indonesian translations.
- If a custom tooltip isn’t available when you long-press something in the IDE, a default tooltip that links to the full documentation is now displayed.
- Additional changes to reduce APK size.
